Trim Your Budget - 7 Ways to Cut the Spending

These relatively painless tips can help you get more mileage out of your paycheck and keep more of your money for yourself.

When you look at your budget, you may feel that there is no possible way that you can trim anything from it. However, with a little strategy, you can find some simple and often relatively painless ways to trim your budget. Give these ideas a try and see if you don't come up will a little something extra each month for saving, putting toward retirement, paying off debt or for doing family activities. A little creativity is all it takes.

Keep a Spend Log

A spend log tracks all of your spending from the $.69 candy bar to the $699 sofa. Write down every penny that you spend, regardless of how small the purchase. Write down where you spent the money, the item, the date and time and the amount. This will also give you an idea of your spending patterns. For instance, you may find that you spend a great deal of money at one particular store each month and when you look at your spend log you can see that you visit that store every day at the same time. Something as simple as changing your habits or where your shop can cut your expenses considerably.

Trim the Fat

This is one of the most common ways to trim your budget. Depending on your financial situation, you may need to make some sacrifices until your situation changes. You may need to cut your cable TV or cut that extra phone line. If the expense is unnecessary, in other words, if you can live without it, you should consider doing just that. If you don't want to give up cable completely, just drop the premium channels. Cut the things that unnecessarily inflate your expenses each month.

Check into Refinancing Your Mortgage

If your rent or mortgage is too high, of course you can look into moving to a cheaper place. However, if you do not want to go that route, you can check into refinancing your mortgage to get a lower rate. Another option is to switch from a 15 year mortgage to an easier to pay 30 year loan. But do this carefully and make sure that the interest rates do not go too high and undermine your efforts.

Keep only One Credit Card for Emergencies

The best thing that you can do for yourself and your family is to cut your credit cards. Keep only one card for emergencies and things that require a credit card like hotel reservations and car rentals. If you are rebuilding your credit, make small purchases on the card and pay off the entire amount each month. Credit cards can eat you up with interest and fees and multiple cards will cause you to dig a debt hole from which you can not escape. Keep the one card and make sure that it has a low interest rate as well as great terms. Then only use it when you absolutely have to and never, ever as an extension of your income.

Check out Bundles

You may find that bundling your cable, telephone and internet will save you a great deal of money. Check into some companies in your area that offer this service and see if it is a good fit for your family.

Insure your Vehicles Wisely

There are actually many ways that you can save with your car insurance. Raise your deductibles, make sure that you receive all of the discounts that you should such as good driver, multiple car and good student discounts. You should also cancel your comprehensive and collision insurance on cars that are older than five to seven years.

Stretch your Food Budget

Everyone needs to eat so finding ways to stretch your food budget is one of the most popular ways to trim your budget. Bring your lunch instead of eating out. This will cut your food budget a great deal. Also, when you cook a meal, cook enough to feed your family one meal and put another meal in the freezer. You would be surprised at how far this can stretch your food dollar.

There are many ways to trim your budget, these are just a few. Look around your own home and at your own circumstances and you'll probably find lots of things you can do to help reduce your expenses.
